-Messenger file photo According to city manager David Fierke, the city of Fort Dodge is expected to receive $3.1 million from road use taxes in fiscal year 2023. This is a decrease of $200,000 from this year.

It is expected that Fort Dodge will receive less funding for road projects from the state government in the next fiscal year.

City manager David Filke told the city council on Monday that the city is expected to receive approximately $3.1 million from road use taxes in fiscal year 2023.

In this fiscal year, the city will receive approximately $3.3 million from the account.

The road use tax is the city’s share of gasoline taxes and vehicle registration fees. It is allocated by the state according to the population.

Fierke stated that the expected decrease is related to the expected decrease in the urban population recorded in the 2020 Census. He said the recent population of Fort Dodge is 24,871, which is less than 25,000.

The proposed road use tax expenditure for 2022-2023 is:

∫$265,325 for electronics and traffic lights

The proposed budget calls for the purchase of a large vacuum cleaner to be installed on a truck to pick up leaves from city streets. The estimated cost is US$110,000.

The city council reviewed three other proposed budgets on Monday, with a view to completing the city’s budget by mid-March set by the state government.

The proposed budget for the water system envisages a 3.5% increase in water charges. The homeowner’s water bill is expected to increase by 75 cents to $3.

The Council approved the second reading of the increase on Monday.

The proposed budget for the water supply system is approximately US$12.5 million.

This includes $700,000 to repaint the water tower at Fort Dodge Regional Airport.

It also requested the purchase of a new backhoe for the public works department, with the cost split between the water and sewer budget.

The proposed sewer budget is approximately US$12.7 million.

The revenue from the water supply and sewer budget comes from expenses, not from property taxes.

The 2022-2023 budget will be the first to include new municipal broadband utilities.

In September, the City Council borrowed approximately US$33.4 million to pay for the materials and the construction of the system that will be able to connect fiber optic cables to every address in the city.

At the same time, the City Council borrowed approximately US$3.5 million to cover initial operating costs.

Municipal clerk and financial director Jeff Nemmers said he expects the utility company to receive revenue from paying customers by the end of the 2022-2023 fiscal year.
